After coming into college, I realised I had missed one precious day of learning from "Jovial John" whilst I was on the trip to Ipswich. As I waited for the day, I dragged any files I have made the changes to into the submitted folders for Website Production. All I am waiting for now is my U28A1T4, and U28A4 in general. I also completed the survey everyone had forgotten to do for Unit 28, I think I should remind them all.. Nonetheless, I also completed the initial survey for Unit 2 that I had missed yesterday. I am not very good at computer systems as that is on the other spectrum of what I am good at. However someday I want to build my own PC so learning this unit would always be beneficial. When I had heard that I missed lots from yesterday, I knew catching up would mean I will need to strain myself slightly over the half terms with a lot of other work outside of college.
At the start of the day, we firstly begun the weekly quiz. I believe that because we were not here, "Jovial John" waited for us. The video was about what computer hardware's are and what each components do. Throughout the video, making notes was difficult as the narrator was a quick speaker - this meant I could answer factual questions but less of the visual. I ended up with 8/16 as a result. Euan J and Gabe H both won, but Euan J beat him at the sudden death match (rock paper scissors). It didn't matter who had the lowest as "Jovial John" wanted to kindly do the rest of them.
Moving onto the actual lesson, "Jovial John" firstly set us a task to find specifications for a gaming computer under £800. I found this hard as I had no idea where to look, so I went on the official Dell Alienware website. However, all of the laptop's were expensive and well over £800 at starting price, so I had to wait and see what results other people found. At the end of this, the purpose was for us to understand that the specifications can determine the overall cost, and the cost depends on the purpose intended. Next, we then defined software definitions for U2A1T2 (I will be checked with U2A1T1 soon) - these key terminologies included utilities, operating systems, applications, drivers, and BIOS.
Once I have done this in my notes, I went onto Bubbl.us (online brain storming sheet) and created a spider diagram of operating systems. I made points about what the operating system does, which is to work with hardware and software's (of course, more detail but that is my general summary). I ended up filling the page and I felt proud I have achieved a lot as this can be reused for assignment one. Once we had lunch, I arrived a minute late as I was clumbsy, so I had to answer a question and oh boy I was lucky as I read my emails, haha. Anyway, "Jovial John" then went through U2A1T1 with me and a few others, which I personally think there is a lot and that some areas are more difficult to understand than the others, possibly due to my inexperienced knowledge of this diverse topic. However, I took them all on and I believe I understand everything now since John as even given me power points with useful notes and such.
Before we actually started on my assignment, me and a few others had to do a task the others did yesterday. This was to go on the computers set up in the corners and fill in a checklist of whether we can perform the actions stated on the sheet. There are a variety of operating systems including Windows 10, Linux, and Windows XP. As tempted as I was to use Windows 10, I wanted to do a checklist of both an old and newer operating system, therefore I did Windows XP and Linux. Once again, I took the longest but I managed to get everything done in preparation for assignment three.
That makes it the beginning of independent study time, I used this time to firstly send the final survey of last unit to everyone else in case they haven't done it yet. I then decided to do this blog earlier for simplistic reasons (go home for half term!! jokes) - I'm getting this out of the way so I can work and then leave quickly at 4pm as usual. To tell you my plans ahead, I will be working on my assignment one and get as far as I can as possible. Then throughout half terms I will be working on assignment one and will email "Jovial John" if I get stuck. I also have a "lot" (emphasis) of work not on outstanding work, but work outside of college - I'll need to work extra hard and take less breaks to catch up, this is so I can get everything done.
With all the work load ontop, I can finally say I have the half term off! ish.
See you next week!
P.S: I will be posting another blog with screenshots of my final website from last unit as promised.
